As we have programmed screenings and events in Long Beach over the last few years, and experienced first-hand what we always believed – that there is a passionate and enthusiastic audience for cinema in Long Beach – the absence of an annual Long Beach Film Festival has often been noted and discussed. As we reached out to the community for ideas and support, we were fortunate to be introduced to the dynamic team of Shawn and Roberta King, visionary filmmakers who have long fostered a personal mission to bring the film festival experience back to Long Beach, and whose organization the Long Beach Film Foundation have kept the brand “Long Beach Film Festival” alive for years in the hopes that they will receive the support to make that dream a reality.

After a few exciting and inspiring meetings, it was clear that our vision was matched measure-for-measure by that of the Kings, and the solution became obvious to all. We are pleased to formally announce that the Long Beach Cinematheque has merged with the Long Beach Film Festival, that we will be working with the Kings to bring the Long Beach Film Festival to our wonderful city, and that we have appointed Shawn King as Long Beach Film Festival Event Producer, and Roberta King as Long Beach Film Festival Program Director and Membership Director. Our mission is to bring the Long Beach Film Festival to Long Beach in 2013.

No doubt there is much work ahead, and we look forward to updating you with our progress. We will most definitely need support, in areas ranging from sponsorship to advocacy to volunteers, and the work begins today – please do get in touch if you would like to lend your support. We recognize that our dream of a Long Beach Film Festival is a dream shared by many of our Long Beach friends, businesses and neighbors, and we are excited and ready to do the work to bring that vision to our great city of Long Beach.
