This year’s instant cult sensation HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN makes its Long Beach premiere!
With a star like award-winner Rutger Hauer, a trailer that went viral virtually the moment it first hit the internet, and what may be the greatest grindhouse cinema title in decades, how could you go wrong with Hobo with a Shotgun?
A train rolls into its final stop. From one of the freight cars jumps a weary-eyed transient, dreaming of a fresh start in a new town. Instead, he lands smack-dab in the middle of an urban hellhole, a place where the cops are crooked and the underprivileged masses are treated like insignificant animals. This is a city where crime reigns supreme, ruled by crime boss Drake and his two sadistic sons. When cop and criminal alike are unable to take down Drake, can salvation come in the form of a lone hobo?
Director Jason Eisener’s blood-soaked thriller is more than just a nod to the grindhouse flicks of the 1970s and ’80s; there is sincerity amid the absurdity, with Rutger Hauer turning in a performance that recalls both the gruff relentlessness of The Hitcher’s John Ryder with the complex pathos of Blade Runner’s Roy Batty. As Peter Keough of Boston Phoenix remarks, “It’s thanks to Hauer that the film transcends its origins; his performance combines Clint Eastwood in High Plains Drifter with Lloyd Bridges in Airplane!” And as Matt Barone of Complex.com writes, “It’s the rare reverential throwback to old-school filmmaking that doesn’t feel contrived. And a large part of that is due to Hauer’s admirably serious performance in a movie that features everything from bumper cars crushing people’s heads to a hooker armed with a baseball bat covered in razorblades.”
**PLEASE NOTE: This screening begins at 11pm, not at midnight!**
