Ferris Bueller's Day OffA DRIVE IN – IN LONG BEACH!!

With the blessing and incredible assistance of the historic Press Telegram site in downtown Long Beach, and the support of the MADhaus and Hollywood Outdoor Movies, we are pleased to bring the Drive In experience back to Long Beach this summer with a back-to-school favorite, 1986′s Ferris Bueller’s Day Off!

Twenty-five years since Ferris, Sloane, and Cameron ditched school for a day of adventure in Chicago (count ‘em folks – 25 years…), John Hughes’ Ferris Bueller’s Day Off remains a timeless high school favorite, in no small part due to Matthew Broderick’s breakthrough performance as the titular “righteous dude.”  Featuring an equally iconic performance by Jeffrey Jones as relentless Dean Ed Rooney, with great performances by Alan Ruck, Mia Sara, and the wonderful Edie McClurg as daffy school secretary Grace,  Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is capped off with a fantastic 1980′s soundtrack featuring The Dream Academy, General Public, and Yello’s overnight hit “Oh Yeah.”

Lunch Truck ItThanks to our event sponsor Lunch Truck It for their assistance in lining up food trucks for this event!  Keep posted – we’ll be announcing our participating food trucks soon!  Come hungry!

Lunch Truck It provides Long Beach a new lunch spot every Wednesday!  A handful of gourmet food trucks post up on Coronado Ave. and lure in hungry masses (you and your friends/coworkers), bringing Long Beach professionals, families, students, and local residents together for lunch and bring local awareness to their part of town: The ZaSo Design District, and the larger East Anaheim Business District.  Visit Lunch Truck It at www.lunchtruckit.com.

Tickets to Downtown Drive In are $10 per person, and are payable at the gate (cash only!).   Children 13 and under may enjoy the event free of charge!  We are pleased to present this event on a VERY large lot, so there will be room for plenty of cars, but we do have a maximum capacity so late arrivals may not find room on the lot.

FM Transmission signal will be broadcast to guests in their cars.  There will also be speakers in an area for those who wish to sit in chairs/on blankets – bring whatever you need to be comfortable.   Out of consideration for those around you, please consider low-back chairs.

Are walk-ins welcome? Parking is difficult in LB, and I don’t want to lose my spot where I live. May I bus in with a blanket, MP3/radio w/head phones and pay a small fee?
    Thanks!

Hello! Walk-ins are welcome, and we will have a section for those who choose to bring small-height chairs/blankets/etc., but please be advised entry would still be $10 per person, free for 13 and under. Let us know if you have any other questions! Cheers!!

$10.00 per person seems pretty steep. Seriously? This costs more per person than the movie theater. Does the money at least go to a good cause?

    • admin says:

Hi Erin! The event is being presented by the Long Beach Cinematheque, a non-profit community organization that provides multimedia, cinematic and arts events for the community of Long Beach (many in collaboration with local organizations such as MOLAA and Autism in Long Beach, and many of them, such as this summer’s Monday Classics on the Beach series, free of charge). We are not a full-scale production company, nor is this a city-produced or funded event, so the production of this Drive In comes at a great expense; we feel that the $10 per person charge – particularly when we are allowing children 13 and under to attend for free – is very fair for the experience (and actually one to four dollars less than your Saturday night adult ticket price at any theatre in town, depending on the theatre).

Any profits, if any, will go to the Long Beach Cinematheque in our efforts to continue to provide eclectic arts and cinema experiences to the community of Long Beach.

      Thank you for your feedback!

$10 is too steep if you have not been to any respectable theater in the past two decades.

lol I have no Job and No Car….10 dollars seems like nothing to me…I spend more on tickets at an actual theater between 12 to 15 bucks and thats not even in freakin IMAX or 3D then I do at Drive Inn’s or any other local events…im sorry I don’t mean to be so blunt but..HAHAHA@people crying over 10 dollars …its a Local event in LONG BEACH..how are you wasting gas…just being honest.

With the understanding of what a dollar means today, it’s nice to be able to provide the experience of what teenagers once enjoyed without realizing, in the life and times, of what was then taken for granted, the experience of the “Drive-In”.

Gone from what sprinkled almost every cluster of cities is the local Drive-In.

The Orange County Swap Meet in Costa Mesa provided this same experience on Thursdays. They used a Blow Up Screen and charged eight dollars with a established Snack Bar on the premise. Great thinking on the person that came up with that idea. The next closest are in Riverside
    ( Van Buren Drive-In), Montclair ( Tiki Drive-In ) and City of Industry ( Vineland Drive-In )

Part of the experience you buy into is the ability to sit outside your car in this Southern California weather. Walk-In’s were not allowed at Drive-In’s back in the day, they are here. Back a pick-up truck into position and turn the bed into an outside lounge. Truly a unique experience.

In addition to the mobile communities that comes together for this event which includes the Food Truck’s ( an event in itself ) is the exposure to people that did not attend established ” Drive-In” designated properties.

It is completely possible, these young people could enjoy this so much that the actual ” Drive-In ” could come back in to our American Culture through them.

Now that is worth the investment in retrospect … it just makes cents.

are you gonna be doing any more of these drive in movies again?
