Our month-long tribute to artist/filmmaker David Lynch continues with a very special screening of 1984’s Oscar-nominated science-fiction epic DUNE – on the beach, under the stars, and FREE!, in collaboration with our friends at Alfredo’s Beach Club!
Based on Frank Herbert’s popular, Hugo Award-winning 1965 novel, Dune takes place in the year 10191, when travel from star system to star system has become possible, but only with the aid of the vital spice Melange. The spice is extremely rare, and only exists on the desert planet Arrakis, home of the Freman tribe who defend it with their lives. Rival families the Atreides and Harkonnens battle for control of the planet, placing our hero, young Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan in his film debut), in the middle of an epic, intergalactic battle.
Boasting ground-breaking visual effects, a grand international cast, and Lynch’s signature flashes of the surreal and nightmarish, Dune was a heady and symbol-rich follow-up to the more straightforward sci-fi adventures of 1983’s “Return of the Jedi,” and was not warmly received upon it release. Over the years it has ultimately achieved its deserved recognition and respect, emerging as a cult classic whose popularity led to a rebirth of two miniseries based on Herbert’s novels, as well as a rumored sequel.
We are so very excited to include this title in our series of the films of David Lynch, and to do so on the beach and under the stars. We can’t imagine a better way to experience this fantastic, dazzling, and for so long under-appreciated work of art.
